Directions
Planting Tips: For best results follow planting instructions. Plant tip above soil line and 4" apart in rows, keep 12" between rows. Onion sets are much easier to grow than starting from seed. They are resistant to bolting and can be stored for a very long time. When to Plant (fall purchase): If you purchased this package in the fall, plant as soon as possible allowing the onions to start a root system prior to the first frosts of winter. If any green sprouts are visible above the ground, mulch heavily for winter protection. When to Plant (spring purchase): If you purchased this package in the spring, plant as soon as possible in early spring once the soil is workable. This usually is 2-4 weeks after your last frost date. Where to Plant: Select a sunny spot with rich well drained garden soil high in organic matter. The pH should be between 6.2-6.8 and consistent even moisture is necessary for a good yield. How to Plant: Onion sets are pressed into the soil so that the point of the onion remains above the soil. Plant the sets 4" apart in the row with 12" between rows. Time to Harvest: For fresh green scallions you can begin to harvest when the leaves are 12-16" tall throughout the spring. If you are growing for cooking onions allow them to ripen thoroughly. When you see the leaves wither just above the neck of the onion it is time to pull them. Usage: Scallions can be stored in the refrigerator for 5 days and are perfect for grilling or on salads. Mature cooking onions can be used fresh on burgers and salads as well as cooked in your favorite dish. Helpful Tips: Onions are shallow rooted and need consistent moisture for flavorful good size bulbs to develop. After Care: Once the cooking onions are harvested, lay them in the sun for a few days allowing the outer skins to cure. Store by roping or hanging in netted bags in a cool, frost free dry spot for use throughout the winter.
