The original Whistle Stop recipes brand. Just add water! These are the same recipes my family and I have enjoyed for years-down-home and delicious! Fannie Flagg, author of Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe. On a lazy afternoon almost a century ago, at a whistle stop nestled beside the tracks just east of Birmingham, a tradition of down-home cooking was born. That's when the first batch of fried green tomatoes was served at the Whistle Stop Cafe. Some fifty years later, Fannie Flagg would write a book about that same whistle stop and the recipes perfected over thousands of meals shared with family and friends. Today the Cafe seems frozen in time as those giant freight and passenger trains rumble by. The cafe still carries on the legacy of down-home family cooking. And for almost half a century now, Billy and Mary Jo McMichael have shared their delicious secrets with the Original Whistlestop Recipes. Ingredients
Yellow Corn Meal, Wheat Flour (Bleached Wheat Flour, Malted Barley Flour, Niacin, Reduced Iron, Thiamine Mononitrate, Riboflavin and Folic Acid), Sugar, Dehydrated Onion, Baking Powder (Sodium Acid Pyrophosphate, Sodium Bicarbonate, Corn Starch, and Monocalcium Phosphate), Salt, Egg Solids, Whey.
Directions
Hush Puppies: Ingredients: 1 bag WhistleStop Hush Puppy Batter. 2/3 Cup Water (add more if too thick) (Oil for Frying). Pour water in mixing bowl. Add Hush Puppy batter and mix with spoon. Let stand for minimum of 15 minutes. After about 10 minutes put favorite cooking oil into boiler and heat to approx. 350 degrees. After oil reaches temperature, use a small rounded spoon to dip small rounded amounts of batter and place into hot oil. Fry until golden to golden brown. Remove Hush Puppy and place on paper towels (double thickness). Note: Place a piece of aluminum foil under paper towel for easy cleanup. Add more water if batter is too thick. Alternate Recipes: Mix a couple of table- spoons of diced onions or diced jalapenos, or corn (to taste). Or, some of each as you like it!
Serving suggestions: Dip into favorite sauce. We recommend Cocktail or tartar sauce. Great with slaw, salads, and soup. And Great all by themselves! For a sweet idea, you may sprinkle some confectionary sugar over Hush Puppies or dip into honey.
