In 1969 bill Taylor left a career as a hotelier in Sydney to lead the establishment of a new family vineyard for his father, bill Taylor senior, in the then relatively unknown Clare valley. An astute man, he recognised the emergence of shiraz table wines and insisted that 120 acres of the variety be planted as a balance to his family's then-gamble with cabernet sauvignon. His foresight was proven correct: despite the challenges thrown by mother nature and other forces, the shiraz grapes and wines crafted from them flourished under his guidance and perseverance. A generation later, the pioneering spirit and fortitude of Bill Taylor is ever present in his family's winery which is now renowned as amongst Australia's finest. Wakefield the pioneer is an exceptional Clare valley shiraz crafted from the very finest fruit grown by and available to the Taylor family.
