Finca Allende Aurus is a blend of four tiny North-facing vineyard blocks, planted in the 1940s at a vineyard site known as ‘Mendiguera.’ Each block is over 70 years in age and grows in sandy-loam, iron-rich and rocky soils. Aurus is a unique Riojan blend of 85% Tempranillo and 15% Graciano. Head-pruned vines are never irrigated and planted incredibly close together, increasing competition for nutrients. Plowed by mule, hand-picked clusters are triple-selected in the vineyard and again in the winery cluster-by-cluster and grape-by-grape. Clusters are destemmed and left uncrushed for cold, pre-fermentary maceration over 6-7 days. After an alcoholic fermentation with three, soft daily pump-overs over 21 days, maceration on the skins takes place over 21-24 days and malolactic fermentation is performed in stainless steel tanks. Finished wine is aged for 24-30 months in new French oak barrels and wine is neither filtered nor fined before bottling. Intense purple in color with powerful and elegant aromas on the nose, aromas on the palate include berry compote, mineral notes, mint, sweet spice, wild herbs, toffee and cocoa.
