Shiitake mushrooms are grown in Japan where they are planted on logs of oak and other trees, one of them the shii - thus the name shiitake or shii mushroom. The Chinese were probably the first to cultivate this mushroom. It can be substituted for other mushrooms in western dishes, but the flavor is quite different. Cooked shiitake mushrooms should be tender, but firm. They have a subtle flavor and a meaty texture to add to such dishes as stir fried vegetables and noodles. The contents of this package equals about 2 1/2 ounces of fresh mushrooms.
Ingredients
Japan Shiitake Mushroom.
Directions
Drop the shiitake into 1 - 2 cups of boiling water. Let them tumble about 1/2 minute to loosen dirt particles. Remove from the burner and allow them to soak for about 20 minutes or until reconstituted and particles have settled to the bottom. Remove the shiitake and strain the liquid. Use the reconstituted mushrooms and the strained liquid to complete your recipe.
