In 1939 when Arnold Kaehler was grinding wheat on a farm in Red Wing, Minnesota, the casing on his portable grinding mill broke. Some of the outer wheat layers sifted through by mistake. Mr. K. was curious and tasted the stray wheat. A particularly fine flavor, he thought. He began experimenting with the wheat in his kitchen at home. Before long he had a cereal, a pancake mix, and a patent on a new process for grinding and screening wheat layers. Mr. K. called his company Sturdiwheat. He prided himself on the strength-building qualities of the wheat layers and soy grits in his breakfast foods. Customers didn't seem to care. They bought Sturdiwheat foods because they tasted good - that fine flavor. Sturdiwheat is still made in Red Wing. We're still using Mr. K.'s patented process and we're still selling Sturdiwheat pancake mix and cereal because of their great taste. Even though they're good for you. Buckwheat Flour, Unbleached Wheat Flour, Selection Portions of Wheat (Inner Bran, Aleuronic & Adjacent Portions of Wheat), Sugar, Soy Grits, Nonfat Milk Solids, Monocalcium Phosphate (Baking Powder), Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda), Salt, Wheat Germ, Soy Lecithin.
Directions
Easy Pancake Directions: 10 medium pancakes; 1 cup mix; 1 cup water. 1. Measure equal parts water and Sturdiwheat pancake mix into a bowl. Stir just enough to moisten all the mix. Batter will be slightly lumpy. Let stand 1 minute. 2. Pour batter onto a preheated nonstick or lightly greased pan. The pan is hot enough when drops of water will bounce on it; for most stovetops this will be at the Medium-High heat setting (375 degrees F). 3. Turn pancakes once when the tops get bubbly and the edges begin to look dry. Easy Waffle Directions: 3 to 4 waffles; 1 cup mix; 1 cup water; 2 tbsp oil. 1. Gently mix ingredients until moistened. 2. Follow waffle iron instructions for baking.
