Produced in the United States, American lager or North American lager is a pale lager beer. Like many beer styles, pale lager also originated in Europe and was carried down by immigrants to the American shores around the mid-19th century. Slightly sweeter than its European counterparts and higher on alcohol content, American pale lager is a moderately hopped beer and occasionally uses adjuncts such as rice or corn.

American lager beer-style is an import from Pilsners of the present-day Czech Republic and Germany. Pilsner beer was produced by American brewers, using locally available ingredients. One main ingredient for brewing this lager is corn, and this practice of using corn for fermentation is deeply linked to U.S. history. Even today, American brewers use corn and rice while brewing their beer, which helps clean the beer's taste and make the body and the color of their beer lighter. Taking this classic American-style beer as a standard, many Asian and North and South American brewers have come up with their own versions. 

Until the middle of1800s,  just like the beer connoisseurs of Europe, American palates also preferred darker beers with higher strength. Since barley could not be grown in America that well, they had to import it from England, which hiked the beer cost.

Additionally, the German immigrants who reached American shores for political and religious refuge also brought along many influences, including beer styles. They brought the native lager brewing techniques to the country and started creating the magic of Bavarian lagers. But due to cost constraints of using imported barley, they too started using locally grown rice and corn in the brewing process.

American-style lagers were the hot favorite among the working class at one point in time because of lesser alcohol content; they could have this refreshing beverage along with their lunch and still return sober to work. American-style lager typically had a neutral flavor with lesser grains. The hop content is moderately low, which gives it less bitterness, enhancing the sweetness of malt and corn. Hop flavors are also quite minimal. The hops flavor has a distinguishable floral, herbal, or spicy character. 

American-style lager or Adjunct lager is the best selling style of beer in the United States and covers almost all of the beer's biggest brands like Coors, Pabst, Budweiser, Miller, and others. Generally speaking, American style lager has three sub-categories: light lagers, standard lagers, and premium lagers.

There isn't much of the difference between these three categories as far as ingredients are concerned. The only difference is the alcohol content. ABV is above 4.5 percent in premium lager, whereas it might be at 3.8 percent in light lager.
