About Cortese wines
White Cortese grapes from the Piedmont area of eastern Italy are the source of Cortese wines. Cortese wine is considered by many to be Piedmont's best white variety. The most famous Cortese wines are from the township of Gavi in southern Piedmont.
The best Cortese wines are widely accepted to be the Gavi di Gavi and Gavi di Tassarolo. Other notable Cortese wines produced in the Piedmont include the Cortese Dell'Alto Monferrato and the Colli Toronesi. You may also see Cortese wines referred to as Cortese Bianco or Bianca Fernanda.
Cortese wines are usually pale yellow with hints of green. The wine is very dry and crisp on the tongue due to its high acidity. These wines have aromas of white flowers, lime, almonds, and grass. Flavors of apple, citrus, fresh herbs, and almonds are prominent. Cortese wines have an alcohol content ranging from 11.5-13.5%.
Types of Cortese wine
Although most Cortese wines on the American market are still, there are also two sparkling varieties. Foaming spumante Cortese wines are fully sparkling wines. Frizzante Cortese wines are semi-sparkling. Spumante or semi-sparkling wines are often labeled "Cortese Marengo" after the famous Napoleanic battle in the Italian Piedmont.
The most popular brands of Cortese wine include:
- La Scolca
- Villa Rosa
- Marchesi di Barolo
- PioCesare
- Broglia
- Fontanafredda
- Ottosoldi
- Coppa La Rocca
Food pairings with Cortese wines
The fresh, fruity flavors of a Cortese wine pair well with fresh seafood, pesto dishes, and green vegetables. Cortese wines need no decanting. For optimal aromas and flavors, chill your Cortese to 45-55°F before serving.
Cortese wines are best when enjoyed young. Most wine experts recommend drinking your Cortese within 3 years of purchase to experience the highest quality.

FAQs about Cortese wines
DOC stands for Denominazione di Origine Controllata. Wines with a DOC designation are made from a specific grape or region and produced with DOC standardized methods. DOC wines are the second-highest quality wines produced in Italy. A Cortese wine with a DOC rating may be labeled "Cortese di Gavi." You can find the DOC designation on the wine label, around the bottle's neck, or on a paper band around the cork with a serial number.
