The Instacart guide to Furmint

About Furmint

Furmint is the grape variety grown in Hungary's famous Tokaji wine region and used to produce delicious dry wine. It is also grown in Austria, where it's referred to as Mosier. Furmint buds early in the growing season but ripens late. It is a popular grape for dessert wines and is the primary grape in the sweet Tokaji Aszu wine. Recently, some winemakers in Hungary have also used the Furmint grape to make crisp, dry white wines.

Current winemakers tend to pick Furmint grapes earlier than they used to in the past to get a more elegant and fresh grape. Dry Furmint wine will be barrel-aged and matured to about 6-10 months, although some winemakers are moving away from oak.

Primary flavors

Furmint wines have a refreshing acidity, with notes of mandarin orange, green apple, Meyer lemon, and ginger. It is a dry wine with a light body and an alcohol by volume ranging from 11.5-13.5%. The Furmint grape has a wonderful combination of flavors. It has pungent aromatics similar to Sauvignon Blanc, the richness of Chardonnay, and the acidity of Riesling. It manages to combine all of these attributes into one intense experience.

Furmint styles

There are 3 different categories of Furmint styles.
  • Dry fermented and stainless steel aged. These wines are usually crisp, with a greenish color with hues similar to light hay. Steel tank Furmints are on the acidic side, so you need to enjoy acidity to like them. They are not the most complex wines but are refreshing with aromas of grapefruit and green apple.
  • New School version of dry, barrel-aged. The barrel-aged Furmints are very different from the steel tank wines because barrel aging tames the acidity. It also adds body and creaminess to the wine. Some have notes of pear and peach with hints of vanilla. The dry, barrel-aged wines can be aged for over a decade and make a perfect wine for a fine dining meal such as roast duck or pork chops.
  • Old School version of dry, barrel-aged. The old-school barrel-aged Furmints is what the Tokaji locals make right at home for their everyday drinking, and it's not as well-balanced as the new-school version. It has hints of orange and dried apricot and the aroma of caramel. This is often a dry dessert wine.

Handling

Furmint wines should be served at temperatures between 45-55°F and in a white wine glass. Opinions on whether or not to decant Furmint along with other white wines vary depending on who is serving and drinking it. Some wine experts believe Furmints are worth decanting to help blow off aromas before serving, but you want to make sure it doesn't decant for too long.
