The Instacart guide to Godello

With its origins in the Northwest Spanish province of Galicia, Godello is a type of white wine. It dates back to the 19th century in Valencia, formerly known as Godello, where a local landowner planted the first vines.

Godello almost went extinct in the mid-20th century when its plantings nearly vanished. Winemaking shifted in the area, and interest in the Godello grape fell. People were ripping up old vineyards, trying to plant more productive grapes.

A group of winemakers took notice and believed they owed it to their ancestors and future generations to protect these ancient grapes. They campaigned to bring more attention to the grape and released examples of what it could offer. The result was a medium-bodied wine with a unique flavor steeped in tradition.

About Godello

Oak-aged Godello is similar to the ever-popular Chardonnay. If you like dry white wines, it's safe to say you'll probably like Godello. The Godello wines, also known as Goveio, Verdello, Godella, and Trincadente, have big fruit and mineral notes and the acidity of peaches, citrus, and apple with a bit more body and slightly higher alcohol content than other whites. Some say that Spain's granite, clay, and slate soils and maritime climate yield a zesty, fresh wine with green apple, melon, mineral, and lemon flavors.

How long does Godello last?

If you have any Godello wine left in the bottle after it has been opened, it will definitely last longer if stored in the refrigerator like any wine. Reseal it with a stopper or a cork to maintain its freshness.

You can tell if your bottle of Godello has gone bad without even having to open the bottle. If the cork seems to protrude from the bottle more than it was initially, the wine may have overheated. If the color of the wine appears dull, faded, or different altogether, it may be a sign of oxidation.

Once opened, should the wine smells like sulfur or vinegar, tastes strange, or is devoid of taste, it has probably gone bad. Should you experience this, it's probably best to dispose of the wine and open a new one to enjoy. Always remember to store your bottles of Godello wine properly, and once opened, you'll want to drink them in a relatively short amount of time.

When storing an unopened bottle of Godello, keep it in a cool, dark location. Additionally, you'll want to aim for a reasonably humid area (around 70% if possible) and avoid temperatures under 45°F and above 50°F. Lastly, if your wine has a natural cork, keep the bottle flat so that the cork remains moist.

If you don't have a wine refrigerator, you'll most likely store it in your kitchen refrigerator. The standard kitchen refrigerator's temperature range is between 35-38°F, which is much colder than a wine refrigerator. As a result, your wines will be chilled, which tends to remove some of the wine's flavor. Yes, the wine will be cold, but it will no longer have the fragrant bouquet or the taste for which you purchased it.

FAQs about Godello

When looking at what food to enjoy with a glass of Godello, think about what foods you would eat with a Chardonnay. While it can stand up to spice, Godello pairs well with almost anything, thanks to its creamy characteristics. You can enjoy salad, roasted chicken, pasta, and buttery mashed potatoes with this wine. It also works well with rich seafood, such as Dungeness crab, trout, oysters, and clams. For a lighter fare, pair the wine with a creamy or semi-aged hard cheese.

In general, lighter wines and depth should be consumed at younger ages than those with higher acidity and darker color. Since Godello is a lighter wine, it's best to best consume it while it's young, when it has recently been bottled. Like the grape's lifecycle, which has earned the motto early grown, early ripening, Godello wines are also best from 1-5 years in the bottle.

As most white wines are best served cold, the ideal temperature to serve Godello is 45-50°F. If you don't have a wine refrigerator, remove it from the regular refrigerator 20 minutes before serving, so it's not too cold.
