About Monica

Monica is a red wine grape variety grown in Sardinia, an island located off Italy's west coast. These grapes are also known as Munica, Mora, Morillo, Pensale Nero, Monaca, Pascali, and Miedda, and they are among the types that widely grow in this area, occupying about 3,000 hectares of vineyard. The island's southern part, near Cagliari, produces most of the Monica grapes. It is speculated that the Monica vine was introduced in Sardinia by the French monks. The monks of Camaldolesi were fond of growing this kind of vine in their monasteries, so the wine is also sometimes known as Camaldolesi.

A second theory is that this variety was brought to Sardinia in the 13th century when the Spanish ruled over the Island. According to ampelographers, there is no evidence to prove this, but it's supported by the fact that some grapes exclusively grown in Sardinia originated from Spain.

Monica grapes suit the farmers in this region since their vineyards are situated far from the mainland. Monica grapes thrive well on hilly land that is adequately exposed to the sun. The vineyards' soil is also chalky, with pH levels ranging from seven to 10. Producers prefer Monica since its yields are consistently abundant. It's also inexpensive to cultivate and easy to harvest. However, farmers should be cautious when handling overripe Monica grapes since they produce high levels of alcohol.

Types of Monica wine

The Monica di Sardegna is a Sardinian Monica that has earned the DOC designation, a mark of quality awarded to Italian wines. This type of grape grows everywhere on the Island, from Cagliari in the south to Gallura in the North. The key component in any of Monica di Sardegna's wines is the Monica grape. It makes up at least 85% of the blend. Only 15% of other red grape types that are not Monica can blend this wine. Monica di Sardegna produces both still and semi-sparkling wine, Monica di Sardegna Frizzante.

Monica wines are rich in red berry and herb flavors and have an earthy taste, with medium to high intensity. The fragrances of Monicas range from red berries, cherries, and red fruit jam, to distinctive spices. The tannins in Monica wine are light, and the acidity level in these grapes is quite low. Because of these characteristics, Monica is categorized as a table wine grape. Below are six types of Monica di Sardegna wines.
  • Pala I Fiori: Ruby red with a vinous smell, this wine is filled with the aroma of wild red berry. It has a rich taste of cloves, blackberries, and Marasca cherries. It is smooth and with light, soft, and round tannins. Pala I Fiori's persistence and acidity are medium, and its alcohol content is 14%.
  • Argiolas Perdera: This type of wine has a combination of fragrances that include Mediterranean herbs and wild berries. The taste is a rich blend of black cherry, blackberry, and ground pepper. It is soft and fresh, persistent, and fine with light tannins, and its alcohol percentage is 14%.
  • Mora and Memo Ica: This specific blend of wine has a scorched earth aroma, ripened blackberries, and truffles. Its tannins are supple, and the wine's fragrance is rich in black cherries, cloves, and a wonderful smell of Mediterranean brush. It contains 13% alcohol.
  • Cantine di DolianovaDolia:  This wine tastes of raw and rustic Monica grapes and has a combination of various aromas such as black pepper, sour fruits, and cherry cola. It has high acidity and an alcohol concentration of 13%.
  • Dolia Nova: The Dolia Nova wine has a Mediterranean scrub and grilled herb scent. Its palate relates to powdered sage, bitter unroasted coffee beans, and dried blackberry.
  • Iselis Monica: Iselis Monica has a ruby red color. It has intense aromas of marasca, vanilla, and cinnamon. It has sweet tannins and is soft and well-balanced.

How to pair Monica wine

You can pair various foods with Monica wine. If you're more familiar with Pinot Noirs, you're in luck. Pinot Noir and Monica share some aromatics, so they typically pair with the same foods. For example, Monica wine is perfect with soups and sauces like fish soups, French onion soup, and fish balls in tomato sauce. You can also pair it with buttered roasted chicken, lamb and pork chops, and braised red meats. Monica wine can also pair nicely with medium-aged cheeses, sausage stuffed mushrooms, Maccheroni with lamb ragu, and grilled steaks. You can enjoy risotto and other Italian pastas with Monica, too.
