The Instacart guide to Refosco

About Refosco

Refosco is a group of closely related dark grape varieties. It's grown in Northern Italy and the bordering Venezia and Treviso regions. The Refosco variety dates back many years, and over time, it has spread to various geographical zones. It is genetically related to other ancient grape varieties, such as Marzemino, which is grown in the Trentino region. DNA studies between these varieties indicate that Refosco could be the result of breeding between Marzemino and an unidentified variety.

Types of Refosco

Researchers identified six types of Refosco in a study that was conducted in 2005. These wines have a fruity taste and an aroma of spices. Below, we discuss the types of grapes in the Refosco group:
  • Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso: This name means "Refosco with red stems" and is the most popular variety in the Refosco group. This variety has earned the ColliOrientali DOC designation of quality and comes from the Friuli Venezia Giulia region. RefoscodalPeduncoloRosso is a late-ripening grape variety. Its wines are full-bodied, with a fruity taste and high acidity levels. Its tannins are discernible and vigorous, and on the palate, it is structured and crispy. RefoscodalPeduncoloRosso wine has vital notes of plums, currants, peppers, and almonds. It has excellent vigor and a rich ruby red color.
  • Refosco d'Istria: This grape variety and wine are commonly referred to as Terrano in Italy and Teran in Croatia. It is also grown in Friuli'sCarso DOC. The popularity of Refoscod'Istria has increased in recent years. These wines develop a rich, fruity taste when macerated for about two years and aged in both barrels and wine bottles.
  • Refosco di Faedis: This type of wine is also known as RefoscoNostrano. This grape variety is identical to Refosconer and RefoscoNostrano. Over the years, its popularity has declined, but grape growers in Faedis have been trying to revive its production. Its yields are relatively high, but its skin is very light and is thus prone to diseases and pests.
  • Refosco Gentile: This variety of grape has low productivity and is not sold commercially. However, some sources state that it can produce high-quality wine.
  • Refosco del Botton: Also known as Tazzelenghe, this grape is high quality, although it is not as popular. It produces ColliOrientali del FriuliTazzelenghe wine, which is subtle and pleasant.
  • Refosco di Guarnieri: Commonly known as TrevisanaNera, this variety is resistant to fungal diseases and characterized by its medium to late ripening. Its wine is ruby red and tangy.
