Take your measurements
Before you purchase clothing online, it's important to take your measurements. These essential numbers will help you determine what size to choose when you're ordering apparel. Depending on the item that you're ordering, you may need to measure:
- Chest: Measure around the fullest part of the bust, keeping the measuring tape level as it passes across your back, under your armpits, and around your front.
- Waist: Measure around your natural waistline. This is the area just below your ribcage and above your belly button. When you bend from side to side, your natural waistline is where you'll see a crease.
- Hips: Measure at the widest part of your hips. Keep the tape measure level as it wraps around your body.
- Inseam: Measure from the top of your inner thigh to your ankle. This is the most difficult measurement to take on yourself. It's best to either ask someone else to help measure your inseam or to measure the inseam on a pair of pants that fit well, going from the crotch to the end of the leg.

Check clothing fabrics
When possible, check the fabric that an item is made from before you order it. This will give you a wealth of information about the item. If you're not familiar with different fabric types, check the labels on some of your favorite (and least favorite) items to get an idea of what you like best. Some key points to consider are:
- Cotton is soft and lightweight but prone to shrinking.
- Polyester dries fast and resists wrinkling, but it's not as breathable as cotton.
- Wool is warm but may shrink, and low-quality wools are often scratchy.
- Fleece is both breathable and warm, but it may pill over time.
- Spandex stretches a great deal, so there's more flexibility in sizing.
