Your motor requires oil to keep the moving parts lubricated and reduce friction between pistons, cylinders, and other moving parts. Without regular oil changes, your car's oil level will become too low, or the oil will stop being effective, which could lead to overheating and costly damage to your motor.

Regular or conventional motor oil is manufactured from petroleum or crude oil with a process called fractional distillation. The distilled oil sometimes has additional chemicals to increase its resistance to breakdown, heat tolerance, and thickness or viscosity. Since it contains several different molecules, it's especially good at smoothing rough surfaces inside engines.

Synthetic oil has molecules with more uniform sizes. It's more expensive than conventional oil, but it lasts longer. Regular oil lasts for about 5,000mi, and synthetic oil can last for up to 12,000mi. Synthetic oil can also increase your vehicle's fuel efficiency and help your engine provide more horsepower. Synthetic blend oil is a mix of regular and synthetic oil, and it has some of the benefits of both types.

Transmission fluid lubricates your transmission like oil lubricates the engine. You can check it with a dipstick near the one for the oil. The fluid should look clear or pinkish. If it contains lots of particles or it smells burnt, you should have it serviced.

Power steering fluid keeps your power steering system lubricated and working well. The power steering reservoir is usually under the hood on the passenger side, and you can usually see the fluid level without opening the cap. If you need to open the reservoir and add more fluid, clean around the cap first to avoid introducing dirt into your steering system.

Your windshield wiper fluid makes cleaning dirt, bugs, and grime off your windshield easier. Some vehicles have a warning light that comes on when your wiper fluid is low. Replacing it is easy, but you should use a product that's made for your car's wipers, not just any cleaner. The wrong product won't work well, and it might harm your windshield wipers.
