The Instacart guide to milk alternatives
About milk alternativesÂ
Milk supplies the body with calcium and protein, among other types of nutrients. It could either be dairy or non-dairy. Non-dairy milk comprises milk alternatives mainly sourced from plants. The milk alternatives are essential when you cannot consume cow's milk due to dietary restrictions, personal preferences, intolerances, or allergic reactions. They are mostly unsweetened but can come in a wide range of flavors and pack great nutrition profiles.
Here are some types of milk alternatives we recommend:
- Soy milk: Soy milk is sourced from soy protein isolate or soybeans and often has vegetable oils and thickeners to enhance its consistency and taste. Its flavor is mild and creamy, but the taste can vary from one brand to the other. Nutritionally, soy milk has just as much protein as dairy milk but half the amount of calories, carbohydrates, and fat.
- Almond milk: Almond butter and water or whole almonds are the main sources of almond milk. It is slightly sweet with the flavor of nuts and reserves a light texture. Nutritionally, it contains less than half the fat content in dairy milk and less than a quarter of the calories. Its carbohydrate and protein contents are also significantly low.
- Oat milk:Â Oat milk comes from a mixture of oats and water. However, it can include additives like oils, salts, and gums that help improve its texture and taste. It helps to lower cholesterol levels in the body due to its high total fiber and beta-glucan content. Beta-glucan is water-soluble and forms a thick gel when passing through the body to bind to cholesterol and hinder its absorption. Oat milk has half the amount of fats and protein found in cow's milk, double the carbohydrates content, and a similar amount of calories.
- Cashew milk:Â Cashew milk is made from mixing cashew butter or cashew nuts with water. It tends to be rich and creamy with a mild nutty flavor and a sweet taste. It, however, has a significantly low amount of carbohydrates and proteins, and its calories are less than a third of those found in cow's milk.
- Coconut milk: Coconut is obtained by mixing the white flesh of coconuts with water. It has a sweet but mild coconut flavor and a creamy texture. It contains trace amounts of carbohydrates and proteins, but about a third of the calories found in dairy milk and half the fat.
- Rice milk:Â Brown or milled rice is mixed with water to produce rice milk. Thickeners are then added to improve its taste and texture. This non-dairy milk contains the least amount of allergens among all milk alternatives. Its mild taste does not diminish its naturally sweet flavor. It has fewer fats and protein than cow's milk, but double the carbohydrates and the same amount of calories.
How long do milk alternatives last?Â
Nondairy milk contains micro and macronutrients like enzymes, lipids, minerals, amino acids, enzymes, and vitamins, among others. This makes it last for only a short period after opening. Use your milk within 3-5 days after you open the pack. Unopened, the milk can last up to a month or a little longer in the fridge.Â
