About grapefruit

Today's grapefruit is the result of an accidental hybrid of an orange and pomelo. Grapefruits are known for their intense, fresh aroma and sweet-tart flavor. China, Vietnam, Mexico, and the United States are the largest grapefruit growers in the world. Within the United States, the primary grapefruit producers are Florida, Texas, and California. Although grapefruit is available year-round, the peak grapefruit season is from late fall through spring.

Several kinds of grapefruit are available today. Your supermarket shelves may contain:
  • Pink: These grapefruits have yellow skin and juicy, slightly sweet pink flesh.
  • Red: Smaller than the pink variety, this grapefruit has ruby-colored flesh and pale pink skin. Red grapefruit taste similar to pink.
  • White or yellow: These are the most common grapefruits sold. This fruit has yellow skin, pale flesh, and a tart flavor.
  • Melogold: This variety is the sweetest grapefruit on the market but can be hard to find in stores. Melogold is larger than other varieties, with skin ranging from light to dark green. The Melogold's yellow flesh is very juicy with few seeds.
  • Pomelo: The largest grapefruit on the market, a Pomelo can be as large as a personal watermelon. The Pomelo has a very thick peel, pale green skin, and yellow-pink flesh.  This grapefruit's crispy texture lends itself to cooking and salads.
  • Oro Blanco: This standard-sized grapefruit has yellow-green skin and pale yellow flesh. The Oro Blanco has the thickest skin of all grapefruits. Unlike other grapefruit, the Oro Blanco is not bitter, making it perfect for peeling and eating.

How to pick out grapefruit

If you prefer your grapefruit on the sweet side, look for red, pink, and Oro Blanco grapefruit. No matter which variety you choose, the sweetest grapefruits are available late in the growing season. Grapefruit harvested from March through May have been allowed to ripen longer on the tree, resulting in sweet, juicy fruit.

Look for large grapefruits that feel heavy for their size. Grapefruits that feel heavy will be juicier due to their higher water content. Most grapefruit will have scratches and scars on the skin from harvesting and transport, but avoid fruits with hard patches or soft spots.

How to prepare grapefruit

Grapefruit is a popular addition to breakfast. Grapefruit is often served chilled, halved, sprinkled with sweetener, and eaten with a grapefruit spoon. Broiled grapefruit is also tasty as an appetizer or dessert. Grapefruit segments can be eaten alone or added to fruit salads, gelatin desserts, or tarts. Grapefruit juice is perfect on its own or added to a cocktail. Grapefruit also makes delicious marmalade or preserves.

Grapefruit peel can add a pop of citrus flavor to baked goods, desserts, and sauces. To zest the peel, wash your grapefruit under hot running water to remove any wax or dirt. Use a kitchen zester to remove the colored zest, stopping when you reach the pith. The white grapefruit pith is bitter and unpleasant to eat.
