The Instacart guide to Envy apples

About Envy apples

In 2009, HortResearch in New Zealand created the Envy apple, a cross between the Royal Gala and Braeburn. HortResearch only uses natural plant breeding methods to produce their fruits, focusing on appearance, taste, and longevity. Today, New Zealand, Australia, Chile, and Washington state in the United States are the only locations where Envy apples are grown. Studies are being conducted in the UK, France, and Italy to determine if those countries are suitable candidates for growing these newly developed apples.

Envy apples have thick, tough skins that are mostly red in color with yellow flecks or spots. One of the best characteristics of Envy apples is that they can take up to 10 hours before the flesh turns brown after cutting them open. They are also available practically all year long from New Zealand, Chile, and the United States.

Like all other apples, Envy apples are a highly nutritious yet low-calorie snack. Each medium Envy apple contains high levels of fiber and vitamin C. With a sweet tasty crunch, these apples are perfect for snacking. They are also great when mixed in with cakes or baked for apple pies. Because they don't brown easily, you can dice them up and add them to chicken salad or Waldorf salad without any worries of them turning color.

Envy apples have lenticels, which are pores that allow the skin of the apple to breathe. Typically apples with more lenticels are much sweeter than those with fewer lenticels. These lenticels are what give Envy apples their sweet reputation. With their crisp flesh, crunchy bite, and fragrant aroma, they are a preferred apple for many.

There are several types of apples that are similar in taste and texture to the Envy:
  • Gala apples. As a parent to the Envy apple, Galas have the same coloring and aromatic flavor as their Envy offspring. They originated from New Zealand just as the Envy apples did.
  • Braeburn apples. Braeburns make up the other half of the duo responsible for the cultivation of Envy apples. They also originated from New Zealand. They have the same red coloring as Envy apples but also have a yellow-green background. Braeburns offer a more tart flavor than the Envy or the Gala.
  • Rave apples. Rave apples are known to be sweet and juicy but can be more difficult to find in a grocery store or farmer market than the Envy, Gala, or Braeburn.
  • Honeycrisp apples. Honeycrisps are a seasonal favorite among apples. They were developed in 1960 and are known for their overwhelming sweetness.

Tips for picking out Envy apples

When choosing apples at the grocery store, be sure to pick out ones that have no bruises, gouges, or scratches. When you find one you like, pick it up and feel the skin. Gently press to be sure it's firm and not soft. If there's too much give or any mushy spots, choose a different apple.

Tips for storing Envy apples

Apples like cold, dry places. The best place to store your Envy apples is in the crisper drawer of your refrigerator. If you are planning to eat them within a few days, they will be fine stored on your kitchen counter.

FAQs about Envy apples

Envy apples are great both in cooked recipes and prepared raw. The next time you want to try cooked Envy apples, try your hand at one of these recipes:
  • Baked apples. Wash your Envy apples, cut off the tops, and remove the cores. You can bake them as-is or fill them with a mixture of brown sugar, cinnamon, nuts of your choice, and raisins. Place a pat of butter inside the apple or on top of the spice and nut mixture. Bake the apples for 30 to 40 minutes in a 375 F oven.
  • Fried apples. Wash and peel the Envy apples. Core them and slice them into thin wedges. Add 1/2 cup of butter, 1/2 cup of sugar, and 2 tablespoons of cinnamon to a hot pan. Stir with a spoon to combine, and then add the apples. Cook over medium-high heat for five to eight minutes, turning over often, so they cook evenly.

Envy apples are not considered to be genetically modified. Genetically modified produce has had changes made to its original DNA. This is not how Envy apples are produced. They are actually non-genetically engineered fruits that are grown using a natural breeding method called Integrated Fruit Production. The growers who use this method take advantage of grafting and budding to create new varieties of apples.
