The Instacart guide to Pacific Rose apples

About Pacific Rose apples

Pacific Rose apples were developed in New Zealand in 1990 and marketed to the U.S. around 1996. Pacific Rose is the marketing name given to it, as its actual name is Scirose. The New Zealand Apple and Pear Marketing Board trademarked the Pacific Rose name, which fits the sweet fruit with a little tartness. Pacific Rose is a hybrid between Splendor and Gala apples.

Pacific Rose is grown in about 1,300 acres in the state of Washington by the Crane family who owns Crane Family Orchards. George Crane planted the first apple trees in 1912 in Brewster, Washington. Presently, his great-great-granddaughters grow the Pacific Rose and have since 2001. A family-run apple business grows most of the U.S.-born Pacific Rose apples. Since there are not many growers of the apple, there's a limited quantity available, making it a treat to find in stores.

Pacific Rose gets its signature rose color from the Splendor parent apple, and it also has some yellow streaks with red hues or just magenta pink. It's described as having a sweet flavor, crisp flesh, and juicy interior with a thin skin that is easy to peel or bite through. Today, Pacific Rose is enjoyed in the U.S., Canada, New Zealand, and has expanded its recent popularity to Asia.

Even though Pacific Rose is a recent development in the apples to choose from, its popularity has increased through the years and for many, the apple has become part of their favorites. The problem is that this apple is only available for a limited time during the year so it can be a bit difficult to find at the store. For those who enjoy a sweet fruit, Pacific Rose is a great apple to try out and has been a hit with sweet tooths all over.

Pacific Rose apples are best enjoyed eaten fresh since they're known to be sweet. Given its sweetness, it can also be used as part of fruit salads, smoothies, fruit juices, and desserts. Chop some apples and add to your chicken or tuna salad, add some slices to your favorite cocktail, or add some pieces on top of some French toast sprinkled with cinnamon.

These apples are versatile since their sweetness goes well with other sweet foods or as a contrast to saltier ones. Simply sauteing them in a pan and adding some honey or cinnamon will be a nice side to a meat dish like pork. You can also freeze the apple to make a sorbet out of them for the hot days of summer. Since this apple is not as easily available, making preserves will also infuse its flavors.
