The Instacart guide to Hass avocados

About Hass avocados

The Hass avocado is one of several hundred varieties of avocado, but it just so happens to be the predominant variety found in refrigerators across the United States, and there's a rich story behind its creation. In 1926, a California postal delivery person, and amateur horticulturist, named Rudolph Hass brought home some avocado seedlings. One of them proved to be so difficult to raise in that environment that Hass considered cutting it down. Due to his persistence to keep it alive, that seedling grew to bear a unique and tasty variety of avocado that now makes up 80 percent of the avocado crop in the United States.

Hass avocados are a medium-sized fruit encased in dark green bumpy skin. They are considered a superfood because they are packed with vitamins and minerals that produce a long list of health benefits, including aiding digestion, the immune system, and regulating blood pressure.

The fruit is probably best known as the primary ingredient in guacamole, a dip or spread that blends lime juice, sea salt, and other ingredients and is frequently associated with Mexican cuisine. Many people dip tortilla chips into a dish of guacamole or add it to quesadillas, tacos, or even use it as a healthy addition to sandwiches.

Nutritionally, a single serving, or 100 grams, of an avocado provides about 160 calories. It is extremely high in vitamins B and K and moderately high in vitamin C, vitamin E, and potassium. Avocados are also a good source of fiber in your diet. The fruit even contains beta carotene. Some studies suggest that avocados can be beneficial in supporting the nutritional needs of older adults.

How to pick out Hass avocados

The Hass avocado is a fruit that requires you to get hands-on at the supermarket to know if it is ripe. Gently press the sides of the avocado and look for it give slightly, but still have some firmness to know it's ready to eat. Examine the skin as well, as ripe avocados will turn a dark purple/black as they reach their peak ripeness. When you give the avocado a gentle push, it should not feel mushy, as this is an indicator that it has over-ripened.

Ripe Hass avocados don't stay that way for very long. Once you find one with the gentle give, it's time to start making plans for what to do with it either that day or the next, or you may miss your chance for an avocado delight.

One signal that the fruit has gone onto the overripe side is the appearance of darker yellow or brown flesh on the inside of the fruit. You might also notice a certain smell that some compare to the scent of pumpkins or squash.

What can you make with Hass avocados?

Applications for the Hass avocado are limited only by your imagination. In addition to following your favorite guacamole recipe, you can also eat raw avocados. Avocado toast, which requires mashed avocados, is a popular breakfast side dish.

Avocados can go great in salads. Slice or cube the fruit as an addition to mix in with your choice of lettuce and other fruits and vegetables. You can also slice avocado onto sandwiches, especially those made with turkey, or use them as a vegan replacement for cheese on burgers.
