The Instacart guide to blackberries

About blackberries

Modern commercial cultivation of blackberries started in 1880 in Santa Cruz, California. A judge named James Harvey Logan crossed a wild raspberry with a wild blackberry to create the loganberry. Throughout the early 20th century, cultivators cross-pollinated various species of wild blackberries to create the types of blackberry found in supermarkets and farmer's markets today. Common types of hybrid blackberries include loganberries, marionberries, and ollaliberries.

Blackberries are tasty, sweet, and versatile. You can eat them fresh, put them in pies, add them to jams, or even make blackberry wine with them. They're an edible fruit from the Rubus Genus and are a member of the Rosaceae family. Also found in the Rosaceae family are stone fruits such as apples, pears, cherries, strawberries, and peaches. Technically, blackberries aren't a true berry but aggregate small fruits with internal seeds called drupelets.

The blackberry plant flowers in the early summer, and by late summer, the blackberries ripen. They start out green in color, and as they mature, they turn a deep purple color. The darker the fruit, the riper and sweeter it is. Similar to its cousin, the raspberry, blackberries grow on thorny branches, sometimes called brambles or canes. Blackberry plants are perennial, producing fruit one to two times per growing season, which takes place between June and September.

In the wild, about 350 species of blackberries exist, and they can be found in temperate climates around the world. The countries of Mexico and Chile supply most of the United States and Europe with blackberries, and the state of Oregon grows the most blackberries within the U.S.

How to pick out blackberries

Blackberries are extremely perishable and, once picked, should be consumed within two to three days. When shopping for blackberries, look for ones with a deep purple color and flesh that looks firm. Blackberries can mold easily, so when looking at a carton of them, check the bottom and all around inside the container for any signs of mold. If you see blackberries that have a green top and still have the stem attached, they've been picked prematurely and won't have the characteristic flavor or sweetness of a vine-ripened blackberry.

Storing and preserving blackberries

Most blackberries come in a plastic clamshell-type container with ventilation holes and a small paper absorption cloth on the bottom. Be sure that the ventilation holes remain open to let air circulate throughout the blackberry container, and always keep them refrigerated. You can also place them in a flat storage container with a paper towel on the bottom and the lid left off.

When you're ready to eat your fresh blackberries, wash them gently with fresh water and eat them as-is. If they seem a bit on the tart side, slice them and sprinkle a touch of sugar or honey over them to give them a bit more sweetness. Freezing berries is easy, simply place them in a bag or container and put them in your freezer. You can use them later for smoothies or to make pies or cobblers. Making jam is another great way to preserve blackberries, and the jam is delightful on buttered toast.

For their organic-certified berries, they have gone through rigorous testing from the California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF) certifying agency. Organic blackberries are grown without the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers. Organic blackberries are free from genetic engineering that means the fruit retains its natural nutrition levels and flavors. In most cases, you can order organic blackberries through Instacart.
