About Catarratto
Catarratto is a classic traditional white grape variety produced in Sicily. It's considered one of the oldest varieties of white grapes in the area. While the first mention of Catarratto dates to 1969, it is believed to be a much older white grape since it has been cultivated for centuries across the Sicilian island.
While Catarratto can be found all over Sicily, it is mainly harvested on the western part of the island. This white grape represents one-third of all Sicilian white grapes with significant production in the Agrigento, Trapani, and Palermo provinces. It is used to create Sicilia DOC wines, and many local harvests feature Alcamo, Marsala, Menfi, and Santa Margherita di Belice. At least eight types of Catarratto grapes have been cataloged, but two of the more popular classes are the Catarratto Bianco Comune and Catarratto Bianco Lucido.
The Catarratto grape is an ancestor of the Grillo, a Sicilian grape variety used to produce Marsala wines. Studies have also revealed the Catarratto is most likely the father of Garganega, one of the most ancient white grapes from Northern Italy, and related to several grapevines such as the Mantonico Bianco in Calabria, the Trebbiano in Tuscany, the Susumaniello in Apulia, the Dorona and Marzemina in Veneto, the Albana and Mostosa in Romagna, and the Malvasia Bianca di Candia in Central Italy.
Catarratto is considered to be a semi-aromatic grape, carrying formidable intense flavors. You may experience tropical fruit, pear, honey, almonds, candied fruit, flowers, and light spicy notes upon your first taste. The texture is fresh and velvety with a zesty finish. Although you may think a white grape wine is light and airy, the opposite is actually true for the Catarratto. Its structure is strong, with tones of malt and pine resin.
Types of Catarratto
- Marsala: Marsala wine tends to have a nutty, brown sugar zest with flavors of dried fruit. It is produced in styles from Secco (dry), Semisecco (semisweet), and Dolce (sweet). Marsala is fortified with brandy, and it has a much higher alcohol content than other wines. This point is especially true when the wine is aged for a long period of time.
- Insolia White Wine: A crisp, dry white wine, Insolia is produced as part of a blended wine or a single variety. It is moderately aromatic and holds notes of lemon and almonds along with grassy or herbal tones.
- Catarratto Pinot Grigio: This blended wine combines both the Catarratto and Pinot Grigio grape varietal. It presents as fresh and enjoyable and is perfect for a glass of wine after a long day at work.
